NRA Personal Protection Outside The Home

This course is ideal for the individual who has a concealed carry permit but has little or no experience carrying a handgun for personal self defense.

2-Day Course

Both days taken consecutively. Must complete both days to pass the course.

14+ Hours Total

Day 1: 9 hours · Day 2: 5+ hours of classroom and range instruction.

Course Pre-requisites:

Successful completion of NRA Personal Protection in the Home course or successfully passing the PPOTH pre-course assessment.

Course Goal

To develop in the students the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective, and responsible use of a concealed handgun for self-defense outside the home.

What to Bring to Class

Required Items

A handgun in good working order
  • Recommended: double action revolvers or semi-automatics
  • Recommended minimum caliber is .38 special or 9mm
  • NO magnum ammo allowed (i.e. .357 mag, .44mag)
(2) speed loaders for revolvers or minimum (2) magazines for semi-autos
Ammo (minimum 100 rounds on day one and 100 rounds on day two)
Ear & Eye Protection
Concealment garment (vest, jacket, sportcoat, etc.)
Strong side, outside the waistband holster or holster purse
  • Holster must securely hold the gun
  • Waistband holsters must allow for safe & easy one-handed reholstering
  • Waistband holsters must be secured by means of a belt
  • NO tactical holsters allowed
  • NO competition holsters allowed
